Giving Back to the Community

Inspired by Weyler's book "The Jesus Sayings"
one Vancouver organization is giving away free 9V batteries
to anybody, on the street, or otherwise.

There are religious traditions
where a monk sets out with his empty begging bowl.
The offering of food is placed it in and he accepts gratefully.
The offering gives him strength to do his work.
In return, he gives guidance and wisdom.
There is an exchange. Both are giving and receiving.

Please don't remove 9V batteries from smoke detectors
for your transistor radios.

Free batteries are available at St. Vincent de Paul Society
on Main Street. Also at the Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood House
on 800 East Broadway near Fraser Street.

Video clip shows batteries tested by Rebecca
from the St. Vincent de Paul Society
on Main Street, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Who Will Save the Electric Car?

You'll get a charge from this!

While electric cars are a great idea, the number of registered electric vehicles in BC, Canada, has declined from 45 to only 12 between 2003 and 2008.

Did you hear about the 'instant success!' of the Xebra electric car in 2006? Unfortunately, that 'success' has turned into a question mark. Xebra owners appear to have 'battery disappointments' according to the Xebra owners' forum postings in Yahoo Groups.

The "killer" of electric cars imho is the cost of battery pack replacement unless you run the electric car on discarded (no cost) batteries. A group of hobby inventors in Vancouver therefore decided to investigate the possibility of reviving dead batteries.

In photo #23, you can see a 12v 6AH sealed lead acid battery that has been undergoing experimental battery capacity restoration. It initially registered only 1.6AH with the battery analyzer. After a series of experimental procedures, the capacity was restored to 3.8AH, shown. It now has over 5.4AH capacity. The blue Currie-Montague electric bike also runs on revived batteries. The process isn't a quick one-step process, though.

This week, I returned a restored (revived) 12V scooter battery to Benelli Canada in Vancouver. When their mechanic loaned it to me, that dead battery showed 0 volts on their multimeter!
